Modern design that works in the Perth climate
Contemporary architecture photographs beautifully and, done carelessly, lives badly. Perth summers are long and the afternoon sun is unforgiving, so a west-facing wall of glass that looks striking in a render can turn a living room into a room nobody uses between December and March. Modern design here has to earn its aesthetics by working with the climate rather than against it.
The good news is that the two goals mostly align. Correct orientation, generous but controlled glazing, eaves and shading sized for the sun angles, cross ventilation, thermal mass and a well-sealed envelope produce homes that are both better looking and considerably cheaper to run. Our process puts those decisions at concept stage, where they cost nothing.

Where the living areas sit relative to north is the single most valuable decision in the whole design. Get it right and shading, glazing and ventilation all become easier; get it wrong and you spend the next thirty years paying for it in cooling.

Does a modern home cost more to build?
Not inherently, but certain contemporary features do. Flat and skillion roofs with concealed drainage, large spans, extensive glazing, rendered or off-form concrete finishes and minimal-trim detailing all carry cost. A modern design on a simple, efficient footprint can be very affordable; the cost comes from the ambition, not the style.
How do you stop a west-facing glass wall from overheating?
Ideally by not putting one there. Where the view or the block demands it, the tools are external shading, correctly sized eaves, high-performance glazing, screening and planting, and thermal mass to buffer the temperature swing. External shading is far more effective than anything applied to the inside of the glass.
What energy rating will my home need?
New homes in Western Australia must meet the energy efficiency provisions of the National Construction Code, assessed during documentation. Designing with orientation and shading in mind from the start usually means the rating is achieved through the design itself rather than through expensive compensating measures late in the process.
